NCER Working Paper Series Some Issues in Using Sign Restrictions for Identifying Structural VARs
نویسندگان
چکیده
The paper looks at estimation of structural VARs with sign restrictions. Since sign restrictions do not generate a unique model it is necessary to find some way of summarizing the information they yield. Existing methods present impulse responses from different models and it is argued that they should come from a common model. If this is not done the implied shocks implicit in the impulse responses will not be orthogonal. A method is described that tries to resolve this difficulty. It works with a common model whose impulse responses are as close as possible to the median values of the impulse responses (taken over the range of models satisfying the sign restrictions). Using a simple demand and supply model it is shown that there is no reason to think that sign restrictions will generate better quantitative estimates of the effects of shocks than existing methods such as assuming a system is

On the Identification of Structural Vector Autoregressions
F ollowing seminal work by Sims (1980a, 1980b), the economics profession has become increasingly concerned with studying sources of economic fluctuations. Sims’s use of vector autoregressions (VARs) made it possible to address both the relative importance and the dynamic effect of various shocks on macroeconomic variables. This type of empirical analysis has had at least two important consequen...
متن کاملMonetary Policy Analysis in a Small Open Economy using Bayesian Cointegrated Structural VARs
Structural VARs have been extensively used in empirical macroeconomics during the last two decades, particularly in analyses of monetary policy. Existing Bayesian procedures for structural VARs are at best confined to a severly limited handling of cointegration restrictions. This paper extends the Bayesian analysis of structural VARs to cover cointegrated processes with an arbitrary number of c...
متن کاملOpening the Black Box: Structural Factor Models versus Structural VARs
In this paper we study identification in dynamic factor models and argue that factor models are better suited than VARs to provide a structural representation of the macroeconomy. Factor models distinguish measurement errors and other idiosyncratic disturbances from structural macroeconomic shocks. As a consequence, the number of structural shocks is no longer equal to the number of variables i...
متن کاملReal wages and aggregate demand shocks: contradictory evidence from VARs
This paper revisits two recent studies that estimate the dynamic response of real wages to aggregate demand shocks. Using identical empirical techniques—structural VARs with long-run identifying restrictions—and similar post-war data, [Gamber and Joutz 83 (1993) 1387] and [Spencer 36 (1998) 120] report contradictory findings. After careful examination, I conclude that the reason for this puzzli...
متن کاملWorking Paper No. 07-12/r Dynamics of Worker Flows and Vacancies: Evidence from the Sign Restriction Approach
This paper establishes robust dynamic features of the worker reallocation process in the U.S. labor market. I use structural VARs with sign restrictions, which take the form of restricting the short-run negative relationship between vacancies and unemployment (i.e., Beveridge curve). Despite the “weakness” of these restrictions, they reveal a clear, unambiguous pattern that when unemployment in...
